 Elements of Effective Communication

Comm 1010-005

Stephen A Reiher, Spring Semester 2011

There were three possible listening exercises available for this assignment. Although it is naturally
difficult for me (as my Professors may say) to listen without asserting my input, this assignment was designed
to place me in a position to do just that. I chose this particular one to see how well I would do in something
that was most potentially challenging out of the three.

Reflection

This class has provided with with some of my most significant learning all semester. As this assignment
reflects, I have been able to take on new perspectives in how I listen to and communicate with those around
me. This illustrates the "Communicate Effectively" SLCC Learning Objective well, as does the whole class. In
addition, I feel that the course material has enabled me to enhance my abilities as a leader, and more
aggresively persue managerial positions in future careers. This exemplifies the SLCC Learning Objective in order
to "Demonstrate competencies required by employers to be hired and succeed in the workplace." This course has
had near limitless positive bennefits to my personal and professional life.

In addition to providing practical experience and insight which enhance my ability to work more
effectively, this course has also helped me identify my personal weaknesses in communication, and has given
me tools to overcome those difficulties or adapt. I view this assignment as an accurate reflection of the type of
tools which become available to students of this discipline. It leads the writer to consider alternative points and
objectively asses them. This has application in many fields, and has reminded me of information given in my
Physics, Math and Psychology classes. There are a great amount of parallels, as I enjoyed pointing out through
class participation and comments. What can personally benefit a student more than a focused look at
communicating better?
